Responding to Japan's Nuclear Accident

Unitech Answers the Call with High-Level Staff, Protective Clothing and Respirators

Within 48 hours of notice, following Japan's March 11, 2011 9.0 earthquake, 42-foot tsunami and level 7, multiple unit nuclear power plant disaster, UniTech assembled and shipped 30 pallets of product including 6,000 coveralls, 3,000 respirators and 9,000 pairs of gloves to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant complex to provide protection for workers in damage control operations. Japan turned to UniTech because UniTech is the world's largest supplier of nuclear protective clothing and services and is uniquely positioned to respond when problems arise. UniTech's supply chain operation supports numerous power plant outages each year worldwide, giving UniTech the advantage of the experience, know-how and inventory required when customers need nuclear protective products on short notice.

When the Japanese affiliate of a U.S. business found itself within the contaminated zone of Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant complex, it turned to UniTech for radiological expertise and advice. Within five days of receiving the call for help, UniTech sent out a contingent of health physicists to Japan to survey the client's buildings and property and to provide recommendations on how best to deal with elevated contamination and radiation levels. UniTech provided the client with instrumentation including Thermoluminescent Dosimeters ("TLDs") and Self-Reading Pocket Dosimeters ("SRPDs") and provided training on radiological hygiene that will allow the client to maintain productivity while maximizing worker protection. UniTech operates ten nuclear laundry facilities worldwide. It has been serving the nuclear industry since 1958. Its ABHP certified and NRRPT registered health physics personnel have more than one hundred person-years of experience dealing with radioactive material from a wide spectrum of nuclear operations. Working with a company that has licensed facilities and radiological expertise like UniTech means that customers can be confident that their protective clothing supplier is able to understand and is ready to respond to any radiological issues that they may have.
